HISTORY/SAMPLE RP:
Michaelys was born in a small community in the southwest of the Wild Woods. It was a simple community, basically simple homes and live-in wagons. Most of the occupants travel alot, they are dancers, musicians, and entertainers. Occasionally a Ranger or even an elf stayed within the community. Outsiders have referred to them as gyspies. Although there are similarities in lifestyle, the occupants are not from any Known gypsie family.
Michaelys was born to Jenna and Stefan. Jenna was a dancer, and Stefan was a crafter of pipes and flutes. The community was very protective of its children. As such, every child spent time with the majority of adults. It was the way they determined what the child's gifts were. There was a blacksmithy, assorted carpentry, hunters and gatherers, those devoted to Torra, and many musickers. Michaelys, like all the children, found many things to his interest. He found the smithy fascinating, but didnt like the heat. He loved helping his Father craft the woodwinds and another clansmen who worked with lutes, mandolins and guitars. He was found to have a gift for music, so he was taught how to play various instruments. He specialized in the lute, bodhran, flute and fiddle.
By the time Michaleys was in his teens, he was playing at most of the clans festivities. He learned how to accompany the dancers with music or drum. He wrote his first song when he was 14, and his instructors told him that he had the gift for becoming a True Bard.
Michaelys didn't spend all his time working and making music. He enjoyed going out with the hunters and gatherers, learning how to read the tracks to find assorted animals. He also learned how to find edible plants and tubers. It was during one of these forays that a hunter got injured. Michaelys was the first to find him. The man had gotten his side sliced open by a wild boar. Michaelys laid his hand over the wound and prayed like he had seen the Clerics do. A faint glow came from beneath his hand and the man stopped clenching his teeth. His jaw dropped open in amazement. Michaelys lifted his hand away and, except for the blood on his hand, the wound was closed. Michaelys was taken to the people who were responsible for the spiritual well being of the community.
From then on, along with his other responsibilities, Michaelys spent time with the Clerics. He learned all about Torra, and how Her blessing kept the community safe. How She watched over the birth of a child and smiled in pleasure and how She held the hands of the dying and eased their way into the next life. He learned to reverence Her and how to treat others fairly as though She were there, walking with him. He learned how to Bless others, how just praying over people would lift their spirits during times of grief.
In time, he incorporated his beliefs into his music. He played at weddings, celebrations of all kinds, dances, especially dances. He played haunting melodies to inspire the soul and lift the heart.
He had the grace of his Mother, and the hands of his Father. He could dance fast or slow. He enjoyed playing for the pleasure of the community. Often times he would think of going out with the others to help earn moeny to buy things the community needed. But his parents always found one reason or other for him to stay. Truly, he didn't mind. He respected his parents and rather enjoyed his association with the Clerics, Musicians, Dancers, and Rangers.
When he was about 15, the Rangers in the community decided he needed to learn swordplay. With his parents permission, the smithy gave him a practice sword and he went with the Rangers to their practice glen. He spent several hours a day with them learning how to attack and defend. He became adept after a number of years, and earned the respect of his peers. By the time he was in his mid-twenties, his parents decided he was able enough to go out with a group to a local faire. It was his first time away from home.
They traveled for about a week, reaching the faire right as it began. Before their wagon was permitted on the grounds, they were asked what they offered. When they said entertainment, they were welcomed heartily. They were shown where to setup their wagon and given the run of the faire. Michaelys listened to what he was told, about where he could play and set out a hat, and where he could go for food and drinks while at the faire. He was turned loose with some of his peers who had been out before.
He carried his lute for his first outing. They setup near an ale seller and a food vendor. Singing a dance tune, they soon had a small crowd gathered. A few went into the vendors stands and made purchases while they listened. At the end of the song, a few coins dropped into the hat. Others called for more songs. Getting a nod from the vendors, they played a few more songs. A few children started dancing to the reels and soon a few of the teens wandering the faire joined in. After finishing the set, quite a few coppers and not less than 3 silvers landed in the hat. Gathering up the coins, the group moved into the ale vendors tent, splitting up the take, they ordered small mugs of ale. Michaelys set down his drink and told the others that he really enjoyed playing. They told him that by the end of the faire he would be weary of it. They had plans to play throughout the faire for the next three weeks. They couldn't know how wrong they were.
At the end of the three weeks, the group got together and purchased things that were needed back home. They loaded up the wagon and headed back. All the way back Michaleys talked of how much he enjoyed the playing and dancing. Seeing the smiles coaxed onto hardened faces, whether that person paid for the play or not. When they returned Michaelys talked of nothing else for weeks. Finally, he asked his Father if he could go back out into the world and seek his fortune. They went together to the Clerics and talked long into the night.
The next morning, Jenna and Stefan woke Michaleys with a huge breakfast. During the meal, Stefan brought over a new pack, in it he placed spare clothing, a cloak for bad weather, and assorted utensils and meals. After the meal, his mother presented him with a travel case for his bodhran and lute. Stefan showed him how to strap the lute on top of the pack, and hang the bodhran on th side. Once he had the pack on, they walked outside. The Clerics were there, with one of the Rangers. He was presented with a finely crafted sword from the smithy, blessed by the Clerics against breakage. Smiling broadly, he gave everyone a hug. Promising to return often, he set out of the community at once.
Many times he returned to share tales with the storytellers of the community. Several were worked into songs. As the years passed, Michaelys developed a habit of buying things for the community that he knew were hard to come by, and had them sent to different faires that he knew the trains went to for pickup.
