Okay.... I'm gonna try to explain this in more detail so that everyone knows my view of the military. YG, if you don't understand this then I'll never talk to you again.
I was a navy sonar tech. I tried my best to do the crappy jobs that they would ask me to do. I was good at it too, but my chief was an ass. He never gave me credit for any of the work I did, always gave me more small jobs to do, never wanted to hear of me speak up about anything and if I ever tried doing any of the things other guys did I was the one that got punished. And it's not like the chief didn't know they did it. He just wanted me to be the one getting in trouble. Heaven forbid if I ever said I was with someone else and they where doing the same thing. I was the target.
Things looked good when they started sending me away to do jobs with other groups on the ship. I busted my ass and the people incharge of that group recognized my effort. They even wanted me to get a military medal called the Navy Achievement Medal. In order for me to get it, though, they had to send the request to my chief. Guess what happened to it.... yeah, I don't know where it went either. I was told three times that other chiefs and officers wanted me to get that medal, but as soon as the guys in my division saw it, that was the end. It's not like it was just that chief either. When he left the ship for good the next one was the same, if not worse, to me.Others were getting that medal for rediculouse things, like painting a room, but I spent hours going all over the ship to get it ready for an inspection that could stop it from being allowed to leave and I get nothing.
Finally someone in my division gets promoted to chief and he was a friend, sort of. We would joke about the other chiefs and he would say that I was doing a lot of great work for the division. As soon as he's a chief he turns his back on me. Others do their jobs and get treated great. I go above and beyond and I'm treated like a toilet. So they wondered why when they asked me to re-enlist I refused. I never hated the military itself, just the way I was treated. I just hate hearing about the military because it reminds me of it all.
I hate that there's the war going on right now. I was even involved in it. I was a part of both original military deployments to the Mediterainian Sea. The ship I was on shot missles. It's an experience not many people get in their lives, but I would have given it up to not have been gotten in there in the first place. If I could have changed thing it would have to have been getting a different ship to be on, but more then likely there would have been someone else to treat me like .
So in the end I just had a bad experience and I wouldn't stop anyone who wants to enlist, but I wouldn't recomend it to anyone either. My youngest sister is in the Air Force and is in Iraq for her third time in the last 2 years. She asked me if I was proud of her and I said, "NO! ARE YOU STUPID?!" I figured she was since the only talks of the military I ever gave were of hatred towards it. I guess that enough for now. I think I've filled this thread up with useless military rants.
