i got this S&D
I’m kinda bored right now so lets see how this works out,
Now, for those who don’t have a defined character yet and would like some ideas on how to go about creating one, here’s a few steps in order from very basic to something that needs thought.
1. Gender: what more can I say...most go for their own, but I wont stop you from doing otherwise.
2. Race: Human, elf, dwarf, and orc, ect. If you are not a big fantasy reader and don’t know much about different races, then do what I did and take the safe route with Human. At least you can relate.
3. Name: Something I'm very bad at, seeing as how my name is D-man . You can go with your DC name, or make a custom one to your gender and race. As far as I know hitting random buttons on the keyboard is the best way, but that’s just me.
4. Class: Thief, Warrior, Mage, Cleric, Archer, ect. This will decide your weapons and history so choose carefully. Thieves and Warriors are the most common, so if you want to be unique be a spell caster or something else that you can think of. Pretty much anything will work as long as it dosent make you invincible (no time travelers with machine guns.... )
5. Physical description. Make it whatever you want, you can even be albino. The description should fit your class and naturally your race. Elf mages wont be big and burly with tattoos. It’s just a fact of life.
6. Weapons: Now, nothing too strong. Its best to pick a weapon out of the DC game, but you don’t have to. I personally have a 3-shot matchlock and a massamune, both given by former clans. They are strong, but won’t let me take on an army of 100.
7. History: One problem in RPs is that many people give too much or too little history about their character. You don’t want to make it sound like your character just appeared in a spot and went on an adventure from there, and you don’t want to bore the reader with your life story. There is no way I can really describe how to get the right amount of back story, but try getting the recent history and why he/she is doing what he/she is doing at the start of the RP. That sets up reasonable motives later.
CONGRATS!!!! That’s the end of the character development, if I forgot anything, which I probably did, please respond and tell me so I can make things more clear.
Now for a few tips on RP in general
RP is 60% common sense, 30% writing ability, and 10% creativity.
People underestimate how much common sense can get you in RPs. An elaborate back-story and outstanding writing ability are not needed as long as you place the right things in the right place with the right motives. In battles, think spatially, and even act it out in the privacy of your computer room to get the physics of a fight correct. As silly as that sounds, it helps.
As for the writing ability, some have it, some don’t. It’s very difficult to make a writing style better. The only way I know is to read good RPs and pick up little bits of writing to add to your own. The part that you CAN fix easily is your grammar. Even if the spell check on this site doesn’t work, which it doesn’t for me, use Microsoft Word to check it.
Then there is the creative aspect of RPs. That’s what keeps it from going dry. This is another of the skills that you have or don’t have. If you have the latter option then read more RPs, borrow some ideas, change the circumstances around to make it your own. One good idea can turn a so-so RP around.
AND THE #1 RULE! NO CALLED HITS
For a 1 on 1 fight, always leave an option for your opponent to escape. If you start a fight and shoot him in the head with a matchlock, then no ones ever gonna want to rp with you again.
And for wars, you can get a little more authoritative and make successful moves, but not by much, its all about tactics, and if your tactics don’t match up with the result you made, then, again, you are not going to find too many people to RP with.
